When it was still interesting.  Before Mandela got in.

Which would be somewhere between 1989 - 1991.

After that time the 'New' regime disbanded many
of the specialist military units that had caused
problems for the ANC.  For example the Recce's
were severely restructured and many of the
former Rhodesians that had moved from Rhodesian
Special Forces (Selous Scouts and Special Air Service)
to South African Special Forces left Africa altogether.

Hi,

I do not speak Russian so maybe someone else could put the
meaning of this onto the discussion.

I know from friends that were in South Africa that Russian and
East German 'advisors' worked there.  In fact the South African
military had copies of East German uniforms made to pass themselves
off as East Germans when they conducted deep recconaisance missions
in the various countries bordering South Africa.
